When I first began writing for AEA, I introduced myself to Jared and Caleb by describing my path toward environmental consciousness. However, I realized recently that I left one critical item out of my story, an article in the August 1, 1995 edition of Discover–Easter’s End. Today I relocated the article and found that it was written by Jared Diamond, the author of Collapse and Guns, Germs and Steel.
Though I wouldn’t consider myself an environmentalist for at least another five years, it was the first time I realized that human actions can have a lasting impact on nature and society.
Here’s the opening:
In just a few centuries, the people of Easter Island wiped out their forest, drove their plants and animals to extinction, and saw their complex society spiral into chaos and cannibalism. Are we about to follow their lead?
